A bottle of wine as a gift from one of our Virginia wineries are always welcomed by our out-of-state or Virginia friends.
Don’t head automatically for the most expensive wine in a store unless you know the recipient has a wine cellar. Expensive wines are usually fine young wines that need many years’ aging. It is best to give a bottle of wine that may be drunk in the next month or two.
Any obscure but exciting wine, such as one made from a rare grape variety or by a promising new producer can be an excellent gift. While I am not a big fan of wine ratings, many wine shops will carry wines that have been rated and recommended by Wine Spectator or other publications. Good advice is to ask your wine dealer for a recommendation. (Barboursville Vineyards have some excellent Virginia wines)
An additional idea would be a top quality balsamic vinegar or estate-bottled olive oil as a gift.
